Who’d have thought that a signed rugby ball last played in 1989 could be so cherished by four RICS members? In reuniting it with its handlers, we’ve raised much-needed funding for the work of CRASH, the construction charity.
CRASH received a £500 donation from Simon Cooke FRICS, Executive Director of APAM, in exchange for the ball used in an RICS Centenary Rugby Challenge match on 27 September 1989.
We turned to our Facebook page earlier in the year after finding the rugby relic in our surveying archives where Simon got in touch to make an offer on the ball for CRASH. Simon was joined at RICS HQ in mid-December by fellow surveyors who lined up with him at London’s Blackheath Rugby Club 25 years ago.
Nigel Rowe MRICS, Senior Vice President at Prologis UK, Nick Barnes-Batty MRICS, Director at Knutsford Asset Management and Chris Mills FRICS, CBRE’s Executive Director, joined Simon and posed for photos with CRASH’s Communications Manager Emma Brophy, who welcomed the cash injection for the charity’s vital work.
It’s great to receive this kind donation from APAM which will support our projects benefiting homeless charities looking to improve their premises. I’m from a rugby family myself so it was interesting to meet up with the players, all of whom are still clearly passionate about the sport and their careers in surveying.
The match between an RICS President’s XV and a Young RICS President’s XV, played before a sizeable crowd:
The rugby match was an exhibition game but it was a very competitive one. The Junior President’s XV ran out very narrow winners with Steve Moriarty, later a professional player for Harlequins, scoring a last-minute try to secure a 48-45 win.
Gavin Hastings OBE, then just an amateur player alongside his role as a chartered surveyor, also played that day. Despite going on to be one of Scotland’s greatest ever rugby union players, I remember that he missed an easy conversion under the posts!
